• What is a Students’ Council?

A representative structure elected by the students, of the students, for the students. Through this students’ council, they can get involved in the affairs of the school working in partnership with the school management and staff for the benefit of the school and students.

The Heritage school believes in living democratically and that is the essence of even the election process of the Students’ council. Since its inception, the council has not only worked towards the betterment of the relationship between the senior students and the school but have consciously worked upon improving the internal processes for the election.

The highlight of the election in 2016 was that they went paperless. Till the previous year (2015) the ballots were being cast on paper in the traditional way just as we have experienced them till a few years back. The students engaged in designing modules and figuring out the technology that would be able to drive this initiative.

  • The student council works along with another teacher who functions as a liaison between the management and council to assist the council to arrive at several key decisions such as timelines, processes, resources and even responsibilities.

The Student council draws up their Constitution to be adhered to pre-election, during election and post-election. The application form allows ample space for all the candidates to have a deeper reflection of who they are. The screening committee takes time for the first level screening followed by the interview process for each position. 2 candidates are selected at the end of this process for each post who then presents their manifesto and campaign via approved channels and means. The Wall of Democracy stands tall with their campaign words. They share their vision for their tenure, effort and relationships they will form with the management. The election process is smooth and swift since it is now paperless. Results are accurate and quick.

The office bearers need to take their oath to serve and take charge of their office after the elections. They have an elaborate induction program to understand operations and get a grip on the near future. Yet another year, a very hands-on council that promises to do more, take relationships forward positively and create change within the school.

  • About Pushkar Abbi (Political Science educator and Student Council Advisor)

Students have been the change makers and have sparked the biggest revolutions around the world. And our quest at the Heritage is to nurture more such servant leaders who can selflessly work for the betterment of the community and society at large.

As a political science enthusiast and an ex student leader at Ramjas College, University of Delhi, I have been a firm believer in the model of participatory democracy as an agent of change. For me Student Council members are givers who care about others, they empathise and go beyond what is required. These are the students who stay that extra hour to make sure that student life at heritage is memorable. On their journey as servant leaders they lead by example, and create new leaders for tomorrow.

With students democratically electing their student representatives our goal is to ensure that the student voice is not just heard but is also taken into consideration while policies are made. And this year with plans like the council charter and the general body meetings the vision is to ensure new levels of accountability and transparency to the community.
